PUBLIC INVITED TO DEDICATIONS NEW HAVEN – The public is invited to tour two new schools this month – the new John C. Daniels School at 569 Congress Avenue and the Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet school at 170 Derby Ave. The dedication of the John C. Daniels School at 569 Congress Ave. comes first, scheduled for this Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at 2 p.m. The dedication of the Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School at 170 Derby Ave. will take place on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at 2 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public and will include student-led tours, student performances and a catered reception. John C. Daniels School The new John C. Daniels School is a pre-K-8 that brings together the students of Prince and Welch Annex under one roof in a spacious new building with all the features of a modernized school (library media center, massive gymnasium, modernized classrooms, art and science labs) plus a courtyard that serves as the “village square” for the new school. This $44 million project comprises 90,740 square feet, and includes modernized classrooms, a courtyard with a playground and amphitheater, the Murray Lender playground and adjacent soccer field, a full-sized gym, cafeteria/auditorium with movable wall, and many other facilities the old schools lacked. Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School Barnard School received a $43 million makeover, including the renovation of the original 1913 school building and new additions. The interdistrict magnet school serves an enrollment of 600 in grades pre-K-8. Focused on the sciences and the environment, the school has numerous science features, including greenhouses and a courtyard for science experiments, as well as a Nature Center in the adjacent West River Memorial Park linked by a pedestrian bridge over Ella Grasso Boulevard.
